The 4% Fix Playlist

Sometimes reading the book isn't enough. During this recurring blog segment, Book Interrupted members share songs that made their playlist and why.

This playlist was inspired by the book The 4% Fix by Karma Brown. Listen to the full Spotify playlist here or watch it here on YouTube.

What's on your playlist?

Good Job by Alicia Keys

Sarah:

“I went back and forth if I should include this song, but the reason I did is because the people that really need The 4% Fix need to hear this. Sometimes people just need to hear you’re doing a good job.

“6am as soon as you walk through the door everyone needs you again”

It’s okay to take time for you and its okay to put your oxygen mask on first. So, if you must get up at 5am just to drink your coffee alone, do that. Also, this book is so excepting and welcoming. She makes you feel good about every baby step.

Strawberry Fields Forever by The Beatles

Kara:

“I chose this song for the 4% fix playlist because why not? The video is silly and playful, and this quality reminds me of the author's light-hearted tone. I also liked thinking about how we'd typically read time management and goal setting books when we're on a mission to structure and maintain an enjoyable life. This song kind of reminds me of the bliss state we sometimes find ourselves striving for.”

Morning Song by Jewel

Lindsay:

“Let the phone ring, let's go back to sleep

Let the world spin outside our door”

This song reminds me of Meredith and Sarah and high school, and it’s also about the morning (and you all know how much I love to go back to sleep!).”

Hyperballad by Björk

Meredith:

In the song, Björk sings about getting up early, throwing things off a cliff to watch them fall, and imaging herself falling off the cliff.

“I go through all this before you wake up

So I can feel happier to be safe again with you”

Probably not what most people would do with their 4% fix, but definitely putting it in action. Haha. It tickled me to think of someone in our group doing this for their 4% fix.

Here Comes the Sun by Nina Simone

Lia:

“So this song done by the remarkable Nina Simone is one of my top five songs of all time. It’s a beautiful piece of music that has served me well in so many lonely, sad and romantic times. It also served me well when I set my alarm tune sound to this on my phone. Trying to get up at 5am to carve out 4% more time in a day just for myself, frankly hurt. But Nina helped.”

Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now by Starship

Kim:

“For 4% fix I’m going to go off script and tell you about a song I meant to put on the playlist, but could not for the life of me remember when it was time to make said list. Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now by Starship made me giggle when I think about it as a song for the 4% playlist. I love this concept because when I hear the song, I like to think of Karma Brown singing to her 4% Fix. “Let ‘em say we’re crazy” (people probably do say that about those who get up a 5am) “I don’t care about that” (an important component to accomplishing rising at 5am - don’t listen to the nay sayers, namely your own loving to stay up late and sleep in inner voice).

"Put your hand in my hand,

Baby don’t ever look back!

Let the world around us just fall apart.

Baby we can make it if we’re heart to heart!!"

These lyrics, when I think about them in relation to 4% Fix, just perfectly describe the amount of self-love and commitment it takes to make a change toward a better you. You know? Sometimes it takes falling in love with yourself first to really be able to give yourself what we all already give so easily to others. The entirety of this song’s lyrics works perfectly for my vision of Karma Brown’s love affair with her 4% fix. It’s just too bad that I couldn’t remember the song when my 4% playlist was due.”
