The Handmaid's Tale
by Margaret Atwood

This book has been banned many times–by states, school boards, libraries and sometimes by whole countries

​

Banned for being sexually explicit, violently graphic, and morally corrupt.

 

This is the story of Offred, one of the“Handmaids” under the new social order who have only one purpose: to breed. In Gilead, where women are prohibited from holding jobs, reading, and forming friendships, Offred’s will to survive is an act of rebellion.

The Hunger Games
by Suzanne Collins

This book has 348 cases involving banning its trilogy in 2010 alone.

 

Banned for anti-family, insensitivity, offensive language, occult/satanic, violence, religious viewpoint, and sexuality.

​

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies Panem, a Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is cruel and keeps districts in line by forcing them to send one boy and girl between 12 and 18 to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

The Giver
by Lois Lowry

This book is on the American Library Association's most frequently challenged and banned books list from 1990 to 2009.

 

Banned for violence, sexual references, infanticide, euthanasia and suicide.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian
by Sherman Alexie

This book was the most-challenged in the U.S. between 2010 to 2019.

 

Banned for profanity, sexual references, and allegations of sexual misconduct.

​

The story of Junior, a budding cartoonist growing up on the Spokane Indian Reservation. Determined to take his future into his own hands, Junior leaves his troubled school on the rez to attend an all-white farm town high school where the only other Indian is the school mascot.
