On this weeks Manuscript Monday Meredith recommends Lizard by Banana Yoshimoto.
I always enjoy a book by Japanese author Banana Yoshimoto. Her characters are unusual, and their stories tend to involve some aspect of the occult. Consequently, the stories are odd and unique, which is one of the reasons I enjoy them. The other is Yoshimoto’s writing style, a deceptively simple and direct prose that is somehow soothing to read. Lizard is a collection of short stories, each a small foray into typical Yoshimoto themes: the occult, gender and sexuality, death, suffering and happiness, and love and connection.
