On this weeks Manuscript Monday Meredith recommends The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham.
If you visit your local library, you may find John Wyndham in the adolescent area. I always thought that strange, though I suspect it’s because some of his books have been required reading in high school English class. No matter, Wyndham stories are a joy to read. I happened upon a pristine copy of The Day of the Triffids at a second-hand shop, and have picked it up, being a book, I’d like to reread. While technically science fiction, The Day of the Triffids takes place in present day (at the time of writing, so sometime in the 1950s). It depicts a post-apocalyptic world in which a most of the human population has been blinded, and seven foot tall, walking plants and preying on the vulnerable humans. The narrator retained his sight by mere luck and is trying to survive the chaos while bearing witness to devastation of the world as he once knew it.
